Cripple goes shopping
Woah what a day! This morning I got into Myer in the city--all by myself--on the basis that a department store is a cripple's best friend. There was no way I could navigate for any length of time. So, I gave the credit card a workout at Country Road: Black woolen suit pants, black merino baby v-neck wool jumper and black 3/4 sleeve top (yay for sales with 25% off!!). meleah and madkap made my life sooo much easier with the booby-rules-for-dressing--as soon as I tried on a couple of buttoned shirts with gaping flesh windows, their sage advice was obvious. I also managed to buy a snappy black t-shirt from the boys section (why are their clothes so much cheaper?) before dragging my exhausted arse back to the car. At lunch I met up with sweetwoods for a cup of tea, catch-up and cat therapy before driving her to the airport. On the way home I stopped off at a factory outlet colossus to see what specials were available at Diesel and Chelsea. I've got a couple of dresses (one jersey knit, one linen) that seem work appropriate. But, I'll check out my work place with greater care before donning them. New wallet! Quite a splurge. But, bloody satisfying. I'm pooped now. Looking forward to fresh prawn and egg fried rice for dinner and the finale of Masterchef Australia. |

High performance
Guess who's legs circumnavigated the mag bike tonight? Mine. All mine. 10 minutes. Hello aerobic exercise. Hello the beginning of the end of cripple-dom. Raawr! No booze for the next couple of nights (weaning off the conference party schedule). Plenty of ice, warrior I and II. 50% weigh-baring makes these excellent options for balance and strength building. In fact, almost all the standard standing yoga asanas are within my scope I suspect. Morgs has the MMA Bisping/Henderson fight on the TV which is physically inspiring. High performance motherf**ker! |

A Tad Late
So, I didn't get my update in before midnight. *hangs head in shame* Since my last update, things have been fine. Max is still quite missed, and his passing left a huge hole in our family dynamic. He was a very special little guy, and we loved him a lot. It's amazing how one cat can leave such an impact on your life. And Max certainly had an impact. It's weird, but Max's passing brought my Grandpa's passing to the forefront of my mind again. Grandpa died nearly 11 years ago, but losing Max was like losing Grandpa all over again. I think it's because their lives were so similar - they were both robust and full of life in their younger years, and then were practically bags of bones when they died. This is always the time of year when I miss Grandpa the most, anyway, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. Grandpa loved fresh garden tomatoes, warm Summer nights, and baseball. This was his favorite time of year, and I think about him a lot - especially when it's time to pick the tomatoes. Ironically enough, today (Thursday) was Grandpa's birthday. He would have been 97. It was also Rusty's birthday, and he turned 9. He got lots of love, hugs, wrestling, and play time today (of course, he does every day, LOL!). He also got a new bag of Snausages, and has been in doggie bliss. I love my little guy so much. Summer B classes start on Monday, and I'm taking Women in Independent Film and Philosophy of Social Science. Since I'm going to be in classes four days a week, it's going to be a good time to get back into my regular gym routine. Working out at home just isn't the same for me, as we don't have an elliptical. The elliptical is my favorite machine to work out on, and nothing even comes close to duplicating it. Still, I *am* losing weight and I feel a lot better. Sadly, three of my favorite shirts no longer fit. :-\ Jon, Kelsey, and I went to see "Up" in 3D last week or so, and it was fantastic. Wonderful movie, very well told story, and so heartbreaking. I hardcore cried throughout a good chunk of it. It's the kind of movie that, immediately after leaving the theater, you want it on DVD. And speaking of DVDs, both "Coraline" and "Watchmen" come out on the 21st. I'm really excited about that, especially Coraline because it's coming out in 3D like it was at the theater. Spending this Summer with Jon and Kelsey (and sometimes Bryan when he's home) has been one of the greatest things in my life. There are some nights we laugh so hard that our faces hurt. I don't know how I got so lucky to be blessed with their existence in my life, but I'm thankful for it. I don't want to imagine how things are going to be when we're no longer together again. I'm cooking a lot more now than I ever have before, and I love it. I had forgotten what it was like to cook for people who truly enjoy what you make, and are genuinely thankful for it. So far this week, I have made eggplant Parmesan and stir fry, and tomorrow night I'm making apple and bacon pork chops. I won't have time to keep this up for the next four weeks while Summer term is in session, so I'm enjoying it now. Well, I think that's about it. I have been reading LJ and commenting when I can. I need to make time to keep up with my journaling, as it is something that means a lot to me and helps me out a great deal. I've missed LJ a lot. Current Mood: peaceful |

rooster
damn rooster ran next door into the parking lot of the general store. lucky me, its closed, only a few cars in the lot. so i go hauling ass over there with a bamboo cane in my hand, thinking: "My Cock's out! augh!" and "I'm gonna have to beat it with this stick to get it back in!". I coralled him behind a dumpster, grabbed him upside down, clipped his wings, and unceremoniously tossed him into a pile of hens. ____ Garlic is harvested and stored. this was the first year I grew what I think is an entire year's supply -- a mix of hardnecks and softnecks. I gotta say, the hardnecks are of superior quality. Unfortunately I damaged a few with the shovel in harvesting, so they are ruined for storage, gotta eat them immediately. Stupid rookie mistake. Don't do that again, West. |

100 Days Countdown: Where we go from here. (350.org)
We're now a hundred days away from October 24, the day when together we'll manage to change the debate on global warming--away from narrow politics and towards a planet with a future. "Together" is the key word in that sentence--it won't happen without you. We need every hand on deck in these last precious weeks. And to make sure all those hands are working in harmony, it would be an enormous help if you could fill out this quick survey to help answer some key strategic questions for 350.org moving forward. Your answers will help our team better serve the growing international climate movement, and will help determine how we play our cards in the months ahead. The poll is just 8 questions long--visit this link to add your voice: http://www.350.org/surveySo far, things are going better than we could possibly have hoped. I've just come back from Turkey, where we helped organize a three-week training session for young activists from across Central Asia. They're spreading the 350 message across vast swaths of the planet where there's barely been an environmental movement before. Tomorrow I get on the plane for India, the Maldives, and the countries of the Middle East--check out the website for regular updates from me, and from our organizing staff all over the globe. And of course, we have pictures--yes, those are 350 kayaks in the shape of 350, and 350 activists from the Dominican Republic on the Spanish BBC, and much more on our blog. ( An example of what's under the cut: If you know people who love to climb mountains, here's a letter to spread from some of the world's greatest climbers; here's one from our finest oceanographer; from some of our leading businesspeople; for farmers and food activists; and from leaders of faith communities. As you can see, this is spreading far beyond normal environmental circles--it's turning into a true movement. )P.S. Please help pass this update around--my younger and more technologically adept colleagues assure me that if you have a Facebook or Twitter Account, you can re-post it with just a couple of clicks: Share on TwitterShare on Facebook |

Forgiveness
Forgive me LJ, for I have sinned. It has been nearly a month since my last update. :-( Not that I haven't done anything; I just haven't taken the time to document it. But I will! I promise. A new update is coming soon. Most likely later today. Right now, I'm in between fits of sleep. I've been sleeping on and off all night, as I can't seem to get my body to function properly. :-P Current Mood: sleepy |

Great blog -- good stuff there. Also, a message from Dr. Sally Fallon -- the brains. She's dangerous, and I love it. |

I'm sitting at the conference dinner, away from the tables with my foot up. It's a moment to pause and reflect. But obviously a moment of ostracism. The disabled toilets don't have an angled mirror for the wheelchair bound (I'm not, but I'm aware of those who are). The vegetarian option was eggplant... Yet another protein-less menu for the morally defensible attendees (not me, as I've lapsed). This might be reasonable if we were at a backyard family reunion, but shameful for $100 a head. It's also pretty offensive that it was only two courses. Very poor. Anyway, thank god for the iPhone eh? I think I'll read the Odyssey. :) |

behold the first mushroom of the season has appeared under my pine tree. This is always a harbinger, and I find it a particularly telling omen. Coming soon will be Amanita Muscaria, the holy one. I also found our first Aronia Berries, from bushes planted a couple years ago. good news! |

Lughnasadh
Coming soon!
Gorsedd: Festival of Lughnasadh 2009The House of Danu convenes its first Gorsedd during the Festival of Lughnasadh, July 31 to August 3, in the coastal redwoods above Watsonville, between Santa Cruz and Monterey, California. Good news for snuggles and parenting
"When mothers work full time, they spend 83 minutes less per day with their child compared to a stay-at-home mother, but the child spends an average of 81 minutes more a day with their father" Link. Yay for fathers! Love yous. EDIT: This discussion refers to time snuggling/cuddling infants, not total time spent with them. |

taters
what sort of Irishman would I be if I couldn't bring in potatoes from the soil? They're starting to come in -- although i didn't plant many this year. This is 8 lbs, from a small 4x4 bed of early season fingerlings. I didnt really plant these -- they were essentially volunteers. I left a few in the soil, maybe 5 or 6 1-inchers, when i harvested last fall. They came up in the spring, but i didnt water or do anything for them at all. Still, 8lbs will be a few meals, and they're delicious. good stuff. |
