Spring in Montreal's Botanical Gardens
Looking at the trees behind the ogham and I've noticed a fascinating thing. It is generally known that birch (beth) is the first tree to show new growth in spring, hence (some of) its connotations with birth and beginnings and indeed the beginning of the ogham alphabet.

However, I noticed today that hawthorn also blossoms beautifully in spring and begins the second group of five (huath) in ogham. Not only this, but vine (muin) begins the third group and is reknowned for its use during beltane for crown-making and finally the fir trees (ailm) are of course evergreens, but they are particularly noticeable at the beginning of spring when no other tree has leaves and the druids first begin to spend more time in the outdoors.

Blackthorn
I finally found a blackthorn tree! I was hoping to find one today. It was positioned in the toxic plants section and I read that ingesting the berries causes purging of the body's systems. Very interesting.

Inside the blackthorn, notice the steel cables controlling it.

The Blackthorn 180 degrees. What was great about this specimen was how it was being pulled together using metal. the branches were quite crazy and terrifying. I am definately attracted to something about this ogham.
